Morning-After Pill in Cyprus: Where, When, and Cost
Emergency contraception is available without a prescription in Cyprus pharmacies. The sooner you take it after intercourse, the more effective it is. This guide gives you the answers you need — plainly, without judgement, and without drama.
What is available in Cyprus
Two main products are sold over the counter, and a third option (a progesterone antagonist) sometimes needs a doctor:
Levonorgestrel — up to 72 hours
- Active ingredient: levonorgestrel 1.5 mg.
- Brand names in Cyprus: Norlevo, Postinor, Escapelle.
- Effectiveness window: the earlier, the better. Recommended within 72 hours (3 days). Can be taken up to 96 to 120 hours, but effectiveness drops sharply.
- Prescription: no, available freely.
Ulipristal — up to 120 hours
- Active ingredient: ulipristal acetate 30 mg.
- Brand name: EllaOne.
- Effectiveness window: up to 120 hours (5 days), with steady effectiveness across the full window, particularly useful after day 3.
- Prescription: no, available freely.
Copper IUD — up to 5 days, the most effective
- Fitted by a gynaecologist within 5 days.
- Around 99% effective.
- Stays on as regular contraception for years.
- Not dispensed at a night pharmacy. Requires a doctor.
How fast it works — and what it does
The pill delays or prevents ovulation. It does not cause an abortion. It does not work if implantation has already happened. It is contraception, not pregnancy treatment.
Levonorgestrel: effectiveness
- Within 24 hours: ~95% pregnancies prevented.
- 25 to 48 hours: ~85%.
- 49 to 72 hours: ~58%.
Ulipristal: effectiveness
- Consistently higher as you approach ovulation.
- More effective than levonorgestrel close to ovulation.
- If you weigh above ~85 kg, ask the pharmacist about ulipristal or the copper IUD — there is evidence that levonorgestrel may be less effective at higher body weight.
Cost and coverage
In Cyprus, the retail price without prescription is roughly:
| Product | Indicative price |
|---|---|
| Levonorgestrel (Norlevo, Postinor, Escapelle) | €9 to €15 |
| Ulipristal (EllaOne) | €17 to €25 |
| Copper IUD plus fitting | €50 to €150 privately (partially covered by GESY via a GESY gynaecologist) |
Product prices are regulated and identical at every pharmacy, day or night. There is no night surcharge.
GESY coverage: Emergency contraception bought without a prescription is not covered by GESY. You pay the retail price. If you prefer to obtain it via a GESY gynaecologist prescription, the cost may be reduced. Check your entitlements at the Pharmaceutical Services.
How to find a pharmacy that stocks it tonight
All pharmacies stock common levonorgestrel products. EllaOne may not be in every pharmacy. Call ahead.

What the pharmacist will ask
You are legally entitled to buy the pill without a prescription. In most cases, the pharmacist will ask one or two questions:
- How many hours since intercourse?
- Is this the first time this cycle?
- Do you take other medicines (especially anti-epileptics, rifampicin, St John's wort)? These can reduce effectiveness.
- Do you plan to start a regular contraceptive?
You are not required to give your name or age beyond ID for age verification. The pill can be dispensed to a minor without a companion — Cyprus law sets no age limit and many pharmacists dispense it as a public health measure.
Side effects and what to expect
Common and mild:
- Headache, nausea, fatigue.
- Lower abdominal pain.
- Breast tenderness.
- Irregular bleeding or a shifted period date.
Less common:
- Vomiting within 3 hours of taking it: return to the pharmacy, a new dose is needed.
- Severe abdominal pain: could be ectopic pregnancy or another cause, see a doctor.
It does not affect future fertility.
After taking it
- Use a condom for any further intercourse until your next period. The emergency pill does not protect for the rest of the cycle.
- Pregnancy test at 3 weeks if your period has not returned within the normal range.
- Sexually transmitted infections: the pill does not protect. Consider testing if intercourse was unprotected with a new partner.
- Regular contraception: speak to a gynaecologist or a GESY doctor about a long-term option that fits you.
Recurring questions
Is this the same as the abortion pill? No. The abortion pill (mifepristone/misoprostol) ends an existing pregnancy, is dispensed under medical supervision, in regulated settings, and within the law. It is not the same medicine.
Can a pharmacy in Cyprus refuse to sell it to me? Very rare. If one pharmacist refuses, you have the right to go to another on-call pharmacy. Emergency contraception is freely available.
Can I buy it in advance to keep at home? Yes. Shelf life is 3 to 5 years depending on the product. Many women keep one on the shelf as a backup.
Does breastfeeding affect this? Levonorgestrel is considered safe while breastfeeding. For ulipristal, the manufacturer recommends a 7-day pause on breastfeeding. Ask the pharmacist.
What does 1402 have to do with this? 1402 is the GESY general information line. You do not need it to obtain emergency contraception. The pill is bought directly from any pharmacy.
