GESY Night Pharmacy Quick Reference: Co-payments and Coverage at a Glance
Quick reference card for GESY coverage at night pharmacies in Cyprus. Co-payments, what to bring, what is and is not covered, and how the night service fee works.
GESY Night Pharmacy Quick Reference
TL;DR: GESY-registered patients pay €1 per medicine at any pharmacy, day or night, capped at €10 per visit and €150 per year. There is no separate night co-payment from the system. For the full primer, read GESY Night Pharmacy Coverage Explained.
The General Healthcare System (GESY) covers prescription medicines at every Cyprus pharmacy, including those on the night rotation. This card answers the questions that come up at 1 AM.
The numbers you need to remember
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Co-payment per medicine | €1 |
| Maximum per prescription | €10 |
| Annual cap | €150 |
| Children under 6 | Often free |
| Tourists (no GESY) | Pay retail price |
| Night service fee (pharmacy discretion) | €2 to €5 |
After you hit €150 in a calendar year, all further GESY-covered medicines are free at point of dispensing.
Who is covered
GESY automatically covers:
- Cypriot citizens resident in Cyprus.
- EU and EEA citizens with legal residence.
- Third-country nationals with valid residence permits.
- Refugees and asylum seekers under certain conditions.
Tourists and short-term visitors are not covered. They pay private retail prices and may reimburse through travel insurance or EHIC.
What you bring to a night pharmacy with a GESY prescription
- GESY card or your social insurance number.
- ID card or passport.
- Prescription — electronic prescriptions are in the system, paper prescriptions also accepted.
- Cash or card for the co-payment.
The pharmacist looks up the prescription on the GESY system using your number. The €1 co-payment is calculated automatically.

Night service fee: what to expect
Medicine prices themselves are the same day or night. A pharmacy may add a separate night service fee of €2 to €5 for opening the door after the 22:00 or 23:00 cutoff. This fee is a service charge, not a medicine cost. Ask on the phone before you set out — most pharmacies will tell you the total upfront.

Four common scenarios
Tourist with an illness
GESY does not apply. You pay private prices. Keep receipts for travel insurance or EHIC. A common antibiotic course costs around €20 to €40 retail.
GESY-registered resident with a chronic condition
Bring your GESY card, the pharmacist accesses your e-prescription, you pay €1 per medicine. Insulin, blood pressure tablets, inhalers, and most chronic medications follow this pattern.
Expat with acute illness
If you are registered with GESY, you need a prescription first — visit a GESY GP or an emergency department. If you are not registered, over-the-counter remedies are available at retail.
Child with a high fever
Many children's medications are over the counter (paracetamol syrup, ibuprofen syrup) and bought at retail. Prescription children's medicines through GESY follow the standard €1 co-payment. Children under 6 often pay nothing.
How to register for GESY
- Visit your local Social Insurance Services office.
- Bring passport or ID, residence permit (if not Cypriot), employment or pension documentation, and your social insurance number.
- Receive your GESY card, usually the same day or within a few days.
- Coverage starts immediately on registration.
Frequently asked questions
Do night pharmacies charge more for GESY prescriptions? No. GESY co-payments are identical day or night.
What if I forgot my GESY card? Pharmacies can look you up using your social insurance number and a government-issued ID.
Can I use GESY for over-the-counter medicines? No. GESY covers prescription medicines. Over-the-counter products are paid in full at the retail price.
What if a night pharmacy does not have my medication? They may order it for the next-day pickup or direct you to another pharmacy. GESY coverage follows you to whichever pharmacy fills your prescription.
Do I need a new prescription every visit? Depends on the medicine. Chronic condition prescriptions can be repeatable. Ask your doctor about repeats.
How do I check my annual co-payment total? Request this information from the Health Insurance Organisation or check your GESY online account if registered for digital services.
